St. John the Baptist Parish - The University of New Orleans Transportation Institute is seeking public input to evaluate and model potential passenger rail ridership between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, including a stop in LaPlace. Building off of previous studies, the research effort is sponsored by the LSU Tran-SET Research Consortium and aims to address last-mile connections between potential stations and areas where people live work and play. Further, the project seeks to develop recommendations that will improve travel connections to employment, family and cultural opportunities across the region.

To participate in this effort, please complete this survey here. Participants will be entered to win a $50 visa gift card. Please take the time to make sure local voices are heard in this process.

In addition to participation in this research effort, the Parish is taking steps to plan for commuter/passenger rail service through the recently completed LaPlace Multi-Modal Transportation Center Plan. The plan identifies Main Street in LaPlace as a potential hub for a prospective passenger rail transit system between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Ultimately, the plan provides technical data to demonstrate capacity for rail service while offering recommendations for a revitalized Main Street.

Implementation of the first set of recommendations include a variety of improvements to Main Street through the Louisiana's Strategic Adaptations for Future Environments (LA SAFE) project. In the next few years, residents can expect improved sidewalks, bike lanes and bio-swales for an improved sense of place and reduction of flooding.
