St. John the Baptist Parish has presented its new Drainage Master Plan, marking a major step forward in addressing drainage concerns across the parish. This comprehensive plan reflects a cornerstone of Parish President Jaclyn Hotard’s administration and represents a data-driven, community-focused approach to long-term flood mitigation and infrastructure improvements. This plan complements the many ongoing drainage efforts parishwide, including excavating canals through the National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the cleaning of culverts underneath Airline Highway from parish line to parish line.

Developed using the latest hydraulic and hydrologic modeling technology, the plan outlines clear, actionable solutions to improve drainage efficiency and reduce flood risks. It covers all areas of the parish, ensuring that improvements are made in a balanced, strategic way—without negatively affecting surrounding neighborhoods.

A major component of the plan includes identifying flood-related risks and recommending improvements to reduce or eliminate those risks parishwide. Several projects outlined in the plan have already begun, with others scheduled for future implementation.

Public engagement and input remain essential as the plan evolves. “We are working together with residents in a clear and transparent way,” said President Hotard. “This isn’t just a study—it’s a plan with real projects, real solutions, and real implementation. It reflects our commitment to protecting homes, businesses, and families in every part of the parish.”

“This plan gives us a real roadmap—not just for addressing current drainage issues, but for preventing future ones,” said Councilmember Michael Wright. “It reflects the kind of long-term, parishwide thinking our residents deserve.”

“This plan gives us real solutions and a clear path forward,” said Councilmember Lennix Madere. “It’s a smart investment in the future of our parish.”

This is the most comprehensive drainage planning effort the Parish has undertaken in decades, and it will serve as a guiding resource for years to come. ###
