Hurricane Ida Recovery

9.21.21 Update

Changes from previous update: 

Water/Sewer

  • The Boil Water Advisory is lifted for the West Bank & all of LaPlace (Water District 2 & 3). The Boil Water Advisory remains in place for Water District 1 (Reserve, Garyville and Mount Airy) and also the Pleasure Bend Water District.
  • Residents are also asked to continue to curb non-essential sewer usages as much as possible such as running washing machines and dishwashers

Debris Removal

  • More than 46,000 cubic yards of debris was collected over the weekend, bringing the total to more than 200,000 cubic yards so far.
  • Debris pick up will continue daily and residents are asked to separate debris as much as possible and do not place near fire hydrants, water lines, water meters and mailboxes.

Permits

  • As a reminder, permits are only needed when structural repairs are made to the framing, roof, or electrical components of the house.

    Additionally, Parish President Hotard suspended all permit or trade filing fees until February of 2022. 

    Structural repair permits that are required are required as part of St. John Parish’s participation in the National Flood Insurance Program, providing eligibility for flood insurance, and to enforce building codes that ensure the safety of its citizens.

Power

  • Per Entergy, the vast majority of customers who can safely receive power have been restored.
  • Entergy is working to continue stabilizing the system and some customers may experience brief, temporary, power outages during this time.
  • Entergy is asking anyone who still does not have power to call and report it to 1-800-ENTERGY or 1-8009OUTAGE

SBA to Open Business Recovery Center in LaPlace to Help Businesses Impacted by Hurricane Ida

  • SBA Business Recovery Center in LaPlace will open on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2021, to provide a wide range of services to businesses impacted by Hurricane Ida.

  • Mondays - Wednesdays, 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

     

  • Disaster Unemployment Assistance is available. Businesses and residents whose employment or self-employment was lost or interrupted as a direct result of Hurricane Ida can apply at https://www.laworks.net/.

Garbage

In response to mounting garbage, Parish President Hotard facilitated a partnership between Metro and Waste Pro.

“My main priority right now is getting the trash off the street for our residents; therefore, taking emergency actions were necessary,” said Parish President Hotard. “I will continue to take any and all actions necessary to rid our streets of garbage. I want to thank residents for their patience and cooperation as we work to get all garbage collected.”

Safe Reconnect of Utilities  

  • If you sustained damage to your home or business electrical and/or gas systems and the utility was not able to reconnect service, please contact Planning & Zoning at Email safereconnect@stjohn-la.gov  or call 985-651-5565.

Temporary Housing Executive Order

  • Allows for placement of one RV, travel trailer or other similar form of temporary housing to be placed on a single-family residential site through August 29, 2022.
